Katharsis: Week 2 - Another Week Gone By
Another Week Gone By
Another week has passed. Another week in life. How important that is, and yet we so often forget. As if time has been given to us forever.
It’s been a few years now. I don’t remember exactly when this journey started. Maybe when I grew closer to God. Since then, I’ve tried not to let a single second go to waste. But old habits, deeply ingrained over the years, often act like intruders in this effort. They creep into quiet moments, appearing as intrusive thoughts, as "shoulds," as alarms telling me to stay alert because something bad might happen.
Have you ever felt that? Have you ever noticed your body resisting the efforts of your mind? I ask because it would be incredibly refreshing to know that others, too, are fighting the same battle between spirit and flesh. And I’d love to hear how you deal with it, in the very moment it happens.
Let’s Start Our Journal
As we do in our Katharsis section, let’s go through some reflection questions together. And believe me, as a therapist, I’m not a big fan of journaling for my clients. But this one, it truly helps. You’ll see by the end. Ready? Here’s the first question of the day.
What moment this week made you feel most connected to yourself or others?
This week had its stressful moments, but it also held moments that washed away every worry. Like this one: every evening, just after 7 p.m., when my little one has fallen asleep and the house is almost completely silent. That’s when I get to experience the things that bring me closer to myself.
It’s the time to eat, talk, write for the blog, watch a movie, or enjoy a cigarette in peace (I’ll quit when the time is right, for now, I’ve cut back significantly). I surrender to the moment. I see my day differently because this hour is my safe space. I’ve built a little shelter to keep the rain out. And in that space, I feel more connected to myself and my family.
Did you experience any unexpected challenges or breakthroughs?
The Dentist Story Continues
Unfortunately, my dental saga isn’t over yet. I visited a new doctor recently, and she helped me a lot—her calm, reassuring approach made a difference. Thankfully, there isn’t too much work to be done, but fear still takes over. Sitting in that chair, my whole body tensed up and it was only the first check-up.
Writing about it helps. Talking about it makes it disappear. I will face it. And I draw inspiration from my clients' journeys, from their resilience. And from Mary, whose strength and endurance through hardships make her a true example of perseverance.
What’s one thing you observed in nature that stayed with you?
A Small Joy in the Rain
Two days ago, we bought some mini croissants and sat in the car, just the three of us, after a visit to our valley, a beautiful place, so close to the city center. Unfortunately, it was raining, so we couldn’t get out with the little one. But the sound of birds, the sight of people walking by, and the serene landscape allowed me to glimpse a peaceful daily life, free from the noise of the city. And how refreshing that was...
How did you handle stress or discomfort this week?
My Refuge
My family is my safe haven. So is connecting with my clients, my city, its people. Waiting to go to the stadium with my father. All the things that nourish my soul, these are my weapons.
What emotion defined your week the most — and why?
Oddly enough, despite my dental struggles, I feel optimistic. There’s a sense of triumph in knowing that I’m still standing after facing something difficult. And everything I love is still here, all around me.
Is there a lesson you learned this week that you’d carry forward?
A Lesson Learned
If there is even one person, one thing, or one creature worth fighting for, then life itself is worth the struggle. And that prayer wraps around me like the comforting scent of a familiar perfume.
What’s one thing you’re letting go of from this week?
I want the moments of doubt about my oral health to fade. I want that vulnerable feeling at the dentist's office to disappear.
How did you make space for rest or creativity this week?
A Beautiful Accident
We visited a lovely little shop, and by chance, I found a diamond painting canvas piece by piece, creating a beautiful image. Meanwhile, Mary was coloring incredible shapes inspired by scenes from Harry Potter.
And just like that, another week comes to an end. The fact that you’re here, reading these lines, is an honor. It makes us feel like we have an incredible company walking with us into this refuge of peace.
Together is powerful.
